Though dialectal behavior therapy (DBT), a fairly new treatment approach, was originally developed to help women with borderline personality disorder, it has been therapeutic for a number of other conditions. Its intent was to help balance out emotions, behavior, patterns and cognition—as these often determine the quality of life. By choosing to change these elements, sometimes through such simple acts as meditation, individuals could learn to change their lives by changing their patterns of behavior and thinking that once kept them disabled by their condition. DBT offers practical application of good choices and behaviors, making life more meaningful, peaceful and/or joyful. Some literature suggests a connection with DBT and 12-step work.
